The President of the United States proclaimed September 2014 as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

A few thoughts from Skip Guarini from Indian Summer Camp

September is "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" and the color is GOLD!

What Skip Guariniwe need to do is to stop calling it "Awareness" month and start calling it "Action" month.

And with ALL due respect to the "Breast Cancer Awareness" folks.... your month is October ....Pink ribbons and all ....stop infringing on September.

The "Race for the Cure" and the NFL pink socks and wrist bands and shoes and the baseball teams with pink hats has begun to filter into September and stretch well into November....so lay off September!!!

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death in children following accidents for kids ages 5 thru 15. I'm very sensitive to all cancers but childhood and adolescent cancers receive only 5% of national funding research.

Yet, nearly 11,000 new cases of cancer in children will be diagnosed every year...from leukemia (A.L.L. and A.M.L.) to brain and central nervous system tumors, neuroblastomas, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, thyroid carcinoma and testicular germ cell tumors, nearly one in 400 children born in the US will be diagnosed with cancer before age 15 and another 1 in 285 will be diagnosed before the age of 20.

Treatments are advancing but the one significant and sometimes unavoidable consequence is the long term devastating effects of current treatments.....limb amputations, large dose chemo cocktails, massive tumor radiation bombardment and tumor surgery...especially on the brain...often bring significant debilitating and long lasting health effects for the rest of the child's life.....

The younger the child, the greater the chance for severe treatment side effects....losing balance, hearing, eyesight, digestive issues, growth retardation, autism, brain damage, scarring and most of all...emotional damage...are all prevalent in children's cancer treatments......

So...remember the GOLD...wear the Ribbon...we all have our cancer targets...but during September.... think about the Kids.
