CAMP QUALITY USA AND CHILDREN’S MINNESOTA PARTNER FOR NEW MINNESOTA CAMP

Camp QualityCamp Quality Minnesota to Be Held August 13 through August 17

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – January 22, 2018 -- Camp Quality USA, Inc., a not-for-profit network of camps providing year-round support programs for children with cancer and blood disorders, and the Cancer and Blood Disorders Program at Children’s Minnesota are partnering to bring summer camp to kids with cancer later this year.

Camp Quality Minnesota, which will be held at the Camp Victory campgrounds in Zumbro Falls August 13-17, will serve children with cancer ages 7-17 in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Planned activities include swimming, zip-lining, lazy-river floating, fishing, a ropes course, archery and crafts.

Led by Executive Director Stephanie Gil, it is the sixteenth Camp Quality USA camp.

“We’re excited to partner with Children’s Minnesota to bring Camp Quality to the region,” said Gil. “Our goal is to include 100 campers in our first year and, not only create an exceptional camp experience, but offer programming that builds community with the children and their families throughout the year.”

The camp is completely staffed by volunteers. Campers are paired with a companion who accompanies and assists them during all activities. Medical staff from Children’s Minnesota will be on-site for the entire duration of camp, attending to minor injuries, illness, homesickness and distributing medications.

“The team at the Children’s Minnesota brings a tremendous amount of medical and psychosocial expertise and supervision, which we require at every Camp Quality camp, as well as great history working with similar camps,” said Gil.

“Our patients are children whose entire lives revolve around clinic appointments, treatments, and hospitalizations,” said Dr. Joanna Perkins, Senior Medical Advisor to Camp Quality Minnesota, and a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Children’s Minnesota. “With Camp Quality Minnesota, they will get to spend time celebrating wellness, running, jumping and playing just like other kids their age. Having our medical team on-site full-time affords them the opportunity to experience fantastic summer camp activities safely. And thanks to the generous philanthropic support from the Spencer Somers Foundation, The Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund, and Children’s Minnesota’s Cancer Kids Fund, the kids will be able to attend for free.”
